Door Jamb Reinforcement

Front doors are often kicked by bad guys because because the doors are only protected by less than 1 inch of soft wood.

One inch of soft wood simply will not defend against a strong kick. It doesn't matter how high the quality of your deadbolt. The frame will blow out making the deadbolt useless. As such, it is critical to upgrade your doorways with a doorframe reinforcement device.

Door Jamb Reinforcement Kits come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but the most effective are between 42" and 48" long as this helps diffuse the force of the kick. In addition, it is critical that the screws that affix the reinforcement device to the doorframe drive into the 2x4 framing of the home itself. If this does not occur, the device will not provide the door security required to stop a strong kick.

The screws should also be AT LEAST #10 in size, but #12 is preferred as this provides additional strength to the doorframe reinforcement apparatus.

Once the doorframe is reinforced, the door itself now becomes the weak point of the doorway, thus it is critical to bolster the strength of this area. This is important because this portion of the door has been hollowed out to accommodate the door hardware such as the deadbolt and door knob. Without door reinforcement in this area, the door will fail with a couple strong kicks.

Choosing A Locksmith...

When choosing a Locksmith, you should be interested in (5) key factors:

- Bonded & Insured
- Skill
- Continuing Professional Education
- Price
- Prompt Arrival

Door Security Email

You can make this search easier by ensuring your Locksmith is a member of the Society of Professional Locksmiths. This provides an assurance that the Locksmith will hit each item on your checklist. Angie's List is helpful, but it can't provide all the information you need in making your choice. SOPL Locksmiths must be bonded and insured to become a member. In addition, these Locksmiths are provided Continuing Professional Education from the highly respected Security Technical Institute (for the Locksmith profession).

Ask your Locksmith if he/she is a member of the SOPL!
